Need Your Help

Hi all,

I am reminded of the things I have learned so far about blogging and community. I have a bit of one here. I just started a Tumblr – and have none there. Like, literally none.

But what do I do? I go and ask a question. Which no one has answered. And which I actually kind of would like other peoples’ thoughts on.

I shared on Facebook, no answer. I shared on Twitter, no answer.

Maybe no one has an answer. That’s fair. Or really scary, actually.

But I thought I would ask here.

The short version of the question? What would science fiction written by the presidential candidates – or their parties – look like? In other worlds, what is the future world that they are hoping to build?

Finals Week!

This week is finals week! Stayed tuned for me showing some honed blogging skills, posting a number of things for a not-quite-so-real business. We have the option of a few, and I have wine at home, so I am thinking the vineyard option.

I also paid to add storage space and audio availability on the site, so I am going to podcast a tiny bit with it, I think. Or at least, post some audio, whatever that amounts to if not a podcast.

Of course, doing audio poses a bit of a challenge. It does not, in and of itself, leave any text for a search engine to pull. And posting a full transcript seems to defeat the purpose.

On the flip side, I don’t know that I have the video-editing skills to do very much fun with a video. And apparently I may not have the self control to do a short video… sorry about my 15 minute interview….

One of the suggestions is also Prezi, which I had not heard of before. Looks like an interesting online presentation creator and editor. Maybe I could combine audio with something fun on there? I will have to explore.

Finally, one of our posts is a proposal to an online sales team. I think I am going to write that in the format of a memo, rather than a blog post. Seems appropriate.

So yeah, hoping to try some new things, tweak some skills I have used, use way more tech, and see what we can’t pull off! Also, may end up tasting some of the product…

Cheers!

Emerging Trends in Blogging

Blogging itself was a new form of communication not too long ago, although in many ways not that different from what came before, from news articles, to editorials, to LiveJournals, and message boards. What has been coming on the scene feels different, but is similar too. Microblogging, and blogging as social media, is where things seem to be going at the moment.

What can this blog, as a blog about writing and blogging, do to keep up with this? What does the future of this blog look like? Read more of this post

Today’s Assignment: Business Blogging

Hi all,

This week’s assignment is about blogging for a business or organization. We’re having a little fun with Keeley Krackerz, Professor Keeley’s delicious new fictional product. The part I am having fun thinking of are properties of the fake product, since I can basically say whatever. Not always so with a real product. Keeley Krackerz are, quote, “Ritz-like crackers that [are] geared towards families.” For the rest it is up to me.

There are two posts to do. One is a fun post, not directly promotion. So just the sort of post you would put up to show people you are still there, living a life, being human, not directly trying to sell the product, but instead part of being a brand, a blog, and a person. As a small, local business (Keeley Krackerz is now a small, local business… see what I did there?), showing this side of the business would be a constant, conscious effort. Which would hopefully be effortless. However, this might be the harder one to write for a fake business. I think I will go with a Happy 4th of July post, to show the company taking time off and enjoying the holiday, and wishing everyone a similar experience.

The second post to do is a “Product in Action” post, something that can be a pillar of the site, but which is meanwhile promotional. This is a post about the crackers. Krackerz. For this, I led by thinking about the pictures I could do with it. I found I had some new Ritz Crackerfuls around, and would like to thank them for some inspiration. So the new product is Stuffed Keeley Krackerz. I was thinking a top-ten list of reasons to eat these crackers (krackerz), which can include facts about the product (fake as those facts are), as well as promote the business in general, like it’s small, local business-ness.

Meanwhile, my 4th of July week has been crazy, so this is all due within an hour! So watch me write! Actually, you can’t, but it’s all gonna happen pretty quick here. Hmmm, not something you normally tell the professor. Right! This was all done days ago, Professor Keeley! We would never procrastinate at Keeley Krackerz!

Speaking of Crisis Blogging…

I signed up for Twitter last night to try that out, and found myself looking at a blogging (micro-blogging) crisis going on at the time. Check out this article for a full scoop. And yes, it looks like The Illusive Man got in on the mix.

I feel like I could say more, but that would basically be repeating the good work that is already in the article above.

How is this usually handled in blogging? I don’t want to rehash something someone else has written, or steal their visuals, which I feel like is much of what I could accomplish. The tweets I saw even show up in the article. So… yeah. Read and enjoy.
