How Do You Choose Which Projects to Pursue?

Maybe in some of my earlier days, I had some problems with asking questions on the Internet. Of course, even on my post lamenting this phenomenon, I got replies! It really is a case where, if you give people an opportunity and a place to reply, they likely will. So, I have one bouncing around in my head.

How do you choose which projects to pursue?

I think I’m going to go with a poll. However, the responses are based on some of my thoughts, so you may very well have your own! Please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments. We’ve been having some fun and success with polls on Comparative Geeks – not success like Patrick Sponaugle has with polls, but success.

Over time, I notice that my writing projects start to bleed together. There are definitely themes and ideas I want to write about – but as they merge, it gets harder to choose! It makes me really want to get SOMETHING written and out there, so that I know I have succeeded at getting some ideas out.

I wrote about my priorities the other day, and got some feedback – but would certainly still love more! I’m turning 30 tomorrow, so it seems a good time to be introspective. Well, more than usual. And to ask questions like, where should I be spending my time? What’s working and what isn’t? What has the most impact? So this is all just part of that exercise. Thanks for the input, readers!

Standing at a Crossroads

Here at DBCII, I have been working my way towards doing more fiction writing – like I’ve discussed in posts like this last Six Word Saturday. Doing more than just blogging; the blogging served a purpose of getting me writing again and frequently, made writing part of my daily routine. But the blogging is both an outlet and a means to an end – but it is not the goal itself.

Meanwhile, on Comparative Geeks I have been considering one of our ongoing features, Science Fiction Today. As I discussed in posts like my year-and-a-half recap, I have been giving this feature or category a lot of thought. I have a ton of ideas of topics to cover, and thoughts on how to approach them or at least get started. And the question is, do I just work this into the flow on Comparative Geeks? Or do something more with it? Read more of this post

The Writing Process Blog Tour (Hannah Givens)

Here is Hannah’s response on the Writing Process Blog Tour! Like me, she hit on blogging and fiction… she went for a third, however, and added her history writing!

I didn’t cover how I do research/history writing (as a fellow history major!) but I noticed many similarities. How I learned to work on history also informs a lot of how I write other things now, especially blog posts. Collect what you’re going to talk about, your outside sources (or links), and then outline, and then write. By the time you’re writing, it can be a breeze!

Also – I love the Writing Process as shown in pictures of Robert Downey Jr. – worth checking out her post just for this!

Fantastic look at how social media can be used, and how it should not be discounted by people just because they do not understand it.

Also, this is a great blogger whom I highly recommend, and I’m not just saying that because she took my comments and edited them into her original post. Yay writers!
