Science Fiction Today – Libraries (The Sunday Re-Blog)

Comparative Geeks

LLast week we lined up Health Care and Immunization, and this week it’s Knowledge and Libraries. A couple of sets of things that go hand-in-hand as we look at the future. And while Holly and I might be outsiders looking in at the world of health care, there’s an inside-track when it comes to libraries: I am a librarian. So I have to try to make this post not about that…

What this post is about is the fact that libraries don’t always appear prominently in Science Fiction – though they feature prominently in Fantasy. Often there are other ways the information is kept or passed on in Science Fiction – the sorts of things Holly talked about yesterday with Knowledge. In  a world where all of human knowledge is at our fingertips… what does the future of libraries look like?

If we were having coffee… back to work edition

Librarian MugIf we were having coffee, I’d probably talk about being back at work this week. And how it was weird. For periods, I could get caught up in work and forgot everything else. At other times, I was so overcome by exhaustion it was impossible not to remember why

It was hard being away. I think that’s probably something parents everywhere can sympathize with. So maybe over coffee you’d be offering that sympathy, that empathy, with me. And then we’d probably wonder what we were doing sitting around drinking coffee when there are kids to be with…

But the coffee’s not finished, so we keep drinking.

I’d probably talk about blogging some. About how great the guest posts have been on Comparative Geeks, and how they’ll keep running for weeks yet. About how we haven’t figured out working blogging back into our lives yet, and the guest posts are so great to help us with that. Though I would mention I pulled off a post on Sourcerer this week…

I’d talk about this blog, as well. About how I’m coming up on a year’s worth of Wordless Wednesdays, and how it’s time to think about doing something different with it. Maybe sharing some sketches. Which means I need to get sketching.

I’m thinking that a graphic novel or webcomic is in my near future. And that, having not found an artist, I may be needing to do that… So I need practice. And this seems like the place to showcase some of that. Well… here or Tumblr. Actually, Tumblr seems like the right place. I’d ask what you think – here or Tumblr?

Thanks for coffee.

If we were having coffee… Geek Baby Edition

Weekend Cookie Share

If we were having coffee, I would offer you one of these cookies.

I would tell you that it’s pretty great being a dad. I would tell you that it took a week in the hospital, and a lot of hard work since, but it’s pretty great. I would also tell you we’re really not sure what we’re planning to do regarding the baby and sharing pictures online, but I would share some off my phone. Which is filling up.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that all the guest posts over on Comparative Geeks have been doing great. I would mention that they could always use some more love, but that they’ve definitely gotten people talking. I’d suggest that you go give them a look.

I would also tell you that we have guest posts that will carry us well into June, really keeping the blog afloat. At this point, it would be radio silence without them. I would say we’re thinking of new posts, other posts, but we haven’t found time to write yet.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you we’re thinking about a Twitter from the baby’s point of view, and ask whether you would read something like that.

If we were having coffee, that’s about all the time I’d have. I’d tell you I have been helping with all the feedings and need to get back to it!

Writing Plans, Blogging Plans, Just Not Here…

Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve blogged here. I had plans for posts heading into the new year, had notes and outlines, had drafts started even. However, as I’ve found before, the first thing to give when I don’t have time is this blog. I’ve at least kept the Wordless Wednesday posts going… my simplest Feature. Well, mostly.

As you may have seen on Comparative Geeks, there are big changes coming in my life. Which means that even there, I will be doing less blogging in the coming months. Am I falling out of writing?

And then today, the day when I would be posting my A to Z theme, instead I have to say – I really don’t think I’ll have time to do A to Z here. I even have the list of writing topics ready to go. But it’s still one thing too many – and I would prefer to put the time into trying to read and interact with other bloggers doing the challenge.

So I am helping with the A to Z Challenge on the blog I contribute to, Sourcerer. And I am running half of the challenge on Comparative Geeks as well, and that’s what I’m most excited about. The theme we’re going with is Science Fiction Today, something I’m excited about. It’s a theme I’ve wanted to put more time and focus into. I wasn’t sure how I would, but this seems like a great way.

Looking for more A to Z blogs? Here’s a nice combined list of some folks doing the challenge. Want more on what my planning is? Read on!
